The automatic pool cleaner was quickly accepted into the pool owner community. It works to clean your pool while you don’t even have to think about it. Automatic pool cleaners can be put into three categories: Suction side, Pressure side and Self-contained electric pool cleaners.

Suction cleaners attach to the pools filtration system, taking advantage of the front end, which “sucks” the water towards the filter. These cleaners work to pull debris towards the filter. Pressure side pool cleaners are also attached to the pools filtration system, but they use the pressure of the water coming back from the filtration system to clean the walls of the pool. Self-contained electric pool cleaners plug into an electric outlet, and have two motors, one os a pump motor which draws debris into the system and the other is a motor to drive the device. Overall, automatic pool cleaners are a great way to keep you pool clean and ready for use at any time, but they don’t replace a pool company because the chemicals and equipment maintenance can not be fixed by a robot, yet.

Using chlorine for pool sanitation and maintenance isn’t for everyone, chlorine does a great job of preventing algae and bacterial build-up, but it can also be an eye irritant for anyone spending a long time in a pool.

One alternative to chlorine is biguanides. Usually called by the brand Baquacil, it uses a hydrogen peroxide based oxidizer. It is important that you do not mix biguanides with chlorine.

Another option is Mineral Sanitation. Copper-silver ionization is brought about by electrolysis. An electric current is created through copper-silver, causing positively charged copper and silver ions to form. When copper-silver ionization is applied, positively charged copper (Cu+ and Cu2+) and silver (Ag+) ions are formed. The electrodes are placed close together and the water that is disinfected flows past the electrodes. However, you will need to maintain a modest use of chlorine.

The third alternative to using chlorine as a pool cleaning substance is Ozone Generators. Ozone gas is basically an active form of oxygen that reacts with bacteria, viruses, algae, and other impurities in the water.  At its low concentration levels in the water it has no effect on your skin and eyes.  The ozone kit is installed in the existing pool or spa filtration plumbing. There are several basic designs of ozone generators but they all inject the ozone gas into the pool water through a small tube. With an ozone system  you will still need to keep a very low level of chlorine in the pool water, but only about 20% of the normal level.
